Right Heart Catheterization

Right heart catheterization is a medical procedure used to evaluate the function of the right side of the heart and the blood vessels connected to it. It involves the insertion of a catheter (a thin, flexible tube) into a vein in the arm, groin, or neck, and guiding it through the blood vessels to the heart. Once in place, the catheter can be used to measure the pressure inside the heart and lungs and to obtain blood samples for analysis.

This procedure is typically performed to diagnose and monitor heart and lung conditions such as pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, and congenital heart disease. It can also be used to guide treatment decisions and to evaluate the effectiveness of medications or other interventions.

Right heart catheterization is generally safe and well-tolerated, but like any medical procedure, it carries some risks. These may include bleeding, infection, arrhythmias, and damage to blood vessels or organs. However, the benefits of this procedure typically outweigh the risks, especially for patients with serious heart or lung conditions.

After the procedure, patients may be required to lie flat for a few hours to minimize the risk of bleeding. They may also experience some discomfort or soreness at the insertion site, but this usually resolves within a few days.

Overall, right heart catheterization is an important diagnostic and monitoring tool for patients with certain heart and lung conditions. If you are scheduled to undergo this procedure, your healthcare team will provide you with detailed instructions and guidance to help you prepare and recover safely.
