CANCER AND MENTAL HEALTH- IT DOESN’T JUST AFFECT YOUR BODY

As far as treatment for cancer goes, with recent technology and advanced methods of treating the disease the procedure has of course become a lot less painful and efficient, decreasing mortality rate by quite a lot as compared to traditional methods of treatment. Doctors now have a better understanding of the causes, symptoms and effects and how to treat their patients accurately. The patients too are always updated and consoled to the best one can, but does it mean that those affected are free of mental and emotional distress? Unfortunately the answer is still a no for this one.

Knowing that one has ‘cancer’, irrespective of the sort and the intensity, the word itself has the capability to put a person into deep distress. Feelings of depression, anxiety and fear are very common in such cases. It is a tug of war between life and death and the exhaustion of anticipation is clearly high on a person and their loved ones. No matter how much knowledge and sympathy or compassion one might get for their situation, it rarely ever eases the pain of the situation.

Yet, does that mean there is no way for them to feel better or make them feel better? Of course we do, but there are certain barriers to that as well- Cancer, depression and anxiety have shared symptoms like fatigue, lack of sleep and decreased appetite which make it quite hard to recognise the difference and makes it very difficult for people around the patient to understand the requirements. Often, patients may go into severe depression and just consolation or company may not be enough.

The most accessible way to deal with this is a daily check-up on the patients and even their family members. If someone happens to have a history of depressive episodes, anxiety or high levels of stress it is quite important to give them special attention to avoid any sort of relapse. If not, they should be checked upon on a regular basis to make sure that they are mentally steady and ready for the fight.

Remember, compassion and empathy never cost anything, you would never know how just genuinely wishing well and being there for someone can change their lives and give them immense strength to fight it through.

Cause cancer is beatable now, all one needs is the strength within to fight it through!
