Spine Surgery: Part 1

Spinal problems are some of the most common issues that a majority of people go through. It has excessively risen due to the “sit and work” culture and the lack of proper spinal care or movement. A lot of people suffer from lower back pain, stiffening, etc.

Spine surgery is usually performed as open surgery. This refers to the opening of the operative site with a long incision so the surgeon can view and access the spinal anatomy.

However, technology has advanced to the point where minimal invasive techniques can be used to treat spine conditions.

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery or MISS does not involve long incisions, open manipulation of the muscle and tissues surrounding the spine is avoided, thus reducing the operative time. This is an important advancement as reducing intraoperative manipulation of soft tissues during surgery results in less postoperative pain and faster recovery.

Some of the examples of Spinal problems include-

  • Disc prolapse – extrusion of disc (a jelly like substance in between the bony vertebra) presents as sharp pain in the hands or legs, weakness of fingers or toes, even difficulty in passing urine.

  • Spondylolisthesis – slippage of one vertebra over other leads to a combination of back pain, leg pain and paralysis

  • Spinal tumours – present with back pain, burning sensations, various degrees of paralysis

  • Spinal trauma – injury to the spine may result in fracture of the vertebra

  • Spinal deformities – like scoliosis which is usually by birth

Most of the spinal problems are usually relieved with postural corrections, exercise and physiotherapy regimen. Surgical interventions are needed in cases of persistent pain, muscle weakness and paralysis.

Spinal surgeries used computerised imaging-

In computer-assisted image guidance, images are taken preoperatively and are merged with images obtained while the patient is in surgery which produces real-time views of the anatomical position and orientation of the operative site while the patient is undergoing surgery.

This method allows surgeons to view the operative site in a more precise manner than traditional visualisation techniques. To add, implants such as rods or screws can be inserted and positioned with a greater degree of precision than conventional techniques.
