 Surgical Oncology is defined as the branch of surgery that is applied to oncology. It focuses mainly on the surgical management of tumors, especially the cancerous ones.

The speciality of this field has evolved in steps similar to medical oncology, also known as pharmacotherapy for cancer, which has grown out of Hematology and Radiation Oncology. 

The expansion of cancer centers will continue to popularize the field and so will developments in minimally invasive techniques, palliative surgery and neo-adjuvant treatments.
