TARGETED THERAPY
How do targeted therapies for cancer work?
Most types of targeted therapies help treat cancer by blocking specific proteins that help tumors grow and spread throughout the body. This differs from chemotherapy, which often kills rapidly growing and dividing cells. Below we discuss different possibilities for targeted therapy in the treatment of cancer.
Helps the immune system destroy cancer cells.
One reason cancer cells proliferate is because they can hide from the immune system. Certain targeted therapies can mark cancer cells so that the immune system can find and destroy them more easily. Other targeted therapies help strengthen the immune system and fight cancer better.
Stops signals that help form blood vessels.
For a tumor to grow beyond a certain size, it must form new blood vessels in a process called angiogenesis. Tumors send signals to initiate angiogenesis. Some targeted therapies, called angiogenesis inhibitors, interfere with these signals to prevent the blood supply from forming. Without a blood supply, the tumor remains small. Alternatively, if the tumor is already supplied with blood, these treatments may kill blood vessels and shrink the tumor. Learn more about angiogenesis inhibitors.
Delivers cytotoxic substances to cancer cells.
Some monoclonal antibodies are combined with cell-killing agents such as toxins, chemotherapy drugs, and radiation. When these monoclonal antibodies bind to targets on the surface of cancer cells, the cells take up cytotoxic agents and kill the cells. Non-targeted cells are not damaged.
Causes cancer cell death.
Healthy cells die in an orderly fashion when damaged or no longer needed. However, cancer cells have a way of circumventing this deadly process. Some targeted therapies can cause cancer cells to undergo a process of cell death called apoptosis. It starves the cancer with the hormones it needs to grow. Some breast and prostate cancers require specific hormones to grow. Hormone therapy is a type of targeted therapy that works in two ways. Some hormone therapies stop the body from making certain hormones. Some prevent hormones from affecting
