Curative surgery
Surgery to get rid of all the cancerous (malignant) tissue in an effort to get rid of the disease. This means taking out some or all of the cancerous organ or tissue as well as some healthy tissue around it. Additionally, nearby lymph nodes may be removed. Localized cancer responds best to curative surgery. Before or after surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy may be administered to kill any remaining cancer cells and shrink the tumor.
In order to obtain adequate margins, a certain amount of both normal and cancerous tissue may be removed during a curative procedure. The goal is to eliminate as few cancer cells as possible, which could lead to a recurrence of the disease. The adjacent lymph nodes to the tumor may also be removed by the surgeon for the same reason.
In some cases, resection of isolated metastases—the removal of single metastases—may be performed, particularly if the patient has been disease-free for more than a year since the surgery. Second-look operations are sometimes carried out in conjunction with adjuvant therapies, but in the vast majority of cancer patients, they have little effect on the final outcome.
In excisional surgeries, the malignant tumor is removed using scalpels or other instruments. There are numerous types of excisional surgeries, each named after a specific part of the body. Laryngectomy, for instance, involves removing a substantial tumor of the larynx, which may also involve removing a portion of the tongue or oropharynx. Similarly, a procedure to remove tumors or parathyroid glands is referred to as a parathyroidectomy.
Depending on the patient's age, general health, tumor location, and other factors, new technologies are used in cancer curative surgeries in addition to more conventional surgical instruments like scalpels.
