Cerebral Angiography

Cerebral angiography is a diagnostic test that uses an X-ray. It produces a cerebral angiogram or an image that can help your doctor find blockages or other abnormalities in the blood vessels of your head and neck. Blockages or abnormalities can lead to a stroke or bleeding in the brain.

  • Cerebral angiography is an angiographic procedure that involves inserting a catheter into a blood vessel in the groin or arm.

  • Noninvasive cerebral angiography uses computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to produce the angiogram

Before this procedure is performed, A local anesthetic will be given where an incision is made prior to the placement of the catheter. The catheter will be positioned within the carotid arteries and contrast dye will be injected. During the injection of the contrast dye, you may have a warm feeling. A regular X-ray will be used to take pictures of the blood vessels in the brain. You will be awake during the procedure, which can take from one to two hours to complete.

The Risks Are:

  • Loss of consciousness.

  • Transient ischemic attack (TIA, a brief stroke-like condition)

  • Paralysis on one side of the body (hemiplegia)

  • Blood clot in the blood vessel (embolus)

  • Bleeding.

  • A collection of blood and swelling (hematoma)

  • Stroke.
