Arrhythmia surgery
Arrhythmia surgery is a medical procedure performed to treat irregular heartbeats, also known as arrhythmias. These abnormal heart rhythms can cause symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, and even chest pain. If left untreated, they can lead to serious complications, such as stroke or heart failure.
Arrhythmia surgery is usually recommended when medication and other non-invasive treatments fail to control the irregular heartbeats. The procedure involves the use of various techniques to destroy or modify the abnormal electrical pathways in the heart. Some of the techniques used in arrhythmia surgery include catheter ablation, maze procedure, and implantable devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators.
Catheter ablation is a minimally invasive procedure in which a thin, flexible tube (catheter) is inserted through a vein in the groin and threaded up to the heart. Once in the heart, the catheter is used to deliver energy (such as radiofrequency or cryotherapy) to destroy or modify the abnormal electrical pathways causing the arrhythmia.
The maze procedure is a surgical procedure that creates scar tissue in the heart to redirect electrical signals and restore normal heart rhythm. This is typically done through open-heart surgery, but minimally invasive options are also available.
Implantable devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators are also used in arrhythmia surgery. Pacemakers are devices that help regulate the heartbeat by sending electrical impulses to the heart. Defibrillators, on the other hand, are used to deliver a shock to the heart to restore normal heart rhythm in cases of life-threatening arrhythmias.
Arrhythmia surgery is typically performed by a cardiac electrophysiologist, a doctor who specializes in the electrical activity of the heart. The procedure is usually done under anesthesia and requires a hospital stay of a few days.
If you're experiencing symptoms of arrhythmia or have been diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat, talk to your doctor about whether arrhythmia surgery might be right for you. With the right treatment, you can reduce your risk of serious complications and improve your quality of life.
