Subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator
A subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (S-ICD) is a type of defibrillator that is implanted under the skin on the chest. Unlike traditional implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), which are implanted in the chest with wires inserted into the heart, the S-ICD system is implanted under the skin and does not require any wires to be inserted into the heart.
The S-ICD system includes a pulse generator that is implanted under the skin on the left side of the chest, and a lead that is placed under the skin and runs along the left side of the breastbone. The lead senses the heart's electrical activity and delivers a shock to the heart if it detects a life-threatening rhythm.
S-ICDs are typically used in patients who are at risk for sudden cardiac death due to a high risk of ventricular arrhythmias, but who do not have a need for pacing therapy. S-ICDs are an alternative to traditional ICDs and can be useful in patients who are unable to tolerate a trans venous ICD due to anatomical considerations, or who are at risk for infection or other complications associated with trans venous ICD placement.
