Balloon Mitral Valvotomy (BMV)

Balloon Mitral Valvotomy (BMV) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat mitral stenosis, which is a condition in which the mitral valve in the heart becomes narrowed, making it difficult for blood to flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle. This can lead to symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, and chest pain.

During a BMV procedure, a small incision is made in the groin, and a catheter is threaded through a blood vessel and into the heart. A deflated balloon is then positioned across the narrowed mitral valve and inflated, which widens the opening of the valve, allowing blood to flow more freely.

The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia and takes about 1-2 hours to complete. Most patients are able to go home the following day, and recovery time is generally quick, with patients able to return to normal activities within a few days.

BMV is considered a safe and effective treatment for mitral stenosis, with high success rates and low complication rates. However, not all patients with mitral stenosis are candidates for BMV, and the procedure may not be effective in all cases.

BMV is a valuable treatment option for patients with mitral stenosis, and can significantly improve their symptoms and quality of life. Patients considering the procedure should discuss their options with their healthcare provider and carefully weigh the risks and benefits.
